NEIL CHAPMAN
Neil Chapman has been in education for the past twenty years. He has taught for five community colleges (Santa Ana, Cypress, El Camino, Golden West, Coastline) and one university (California State University, Long Beach.) Sixteen years were spent with CSULB. Neil has now made his home and career at Mt. San Antonio College. His degrees are in Photographic Media (B.A.), Art (M.A.) and Educational Management (Ed.D.) and for five years he has also owned an advertising studio.
Neil considers California his home but has also lived in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Thailand and England. His travels have taken him to Mexico, Canada, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, and Utah. He is currently working on a book of portraits titled "Artisans of the New Mexico Pueblos." Among other photographic projects are "Surreal Landscapes" and "Portraits on Melrose", samples of these works can be seen on his web site listed under personal projects.
He has been honored to be included in the collections of: New Orleans Museum of Art, Bibleothique Nationale Paris, Center for Creative Photography, Vesti Corporation, Manual Alvarez Bravo Collection, Ansel Adams Collection, UCLA, CSUF, CSULB, University of Florida, Shapiro Productions among others. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and been widely published. In light of this he considers his greatest accomplishments to be his students.
It is easy to see when Neil is at his best he is working with students. He spends many hours outside of school working with and maintaining relationships with students who soon move from teacher/student relationship to friend. It is a fair judgment to say he has many friends. He believes in life long education and feels there is a unique perpetuating synergy in the exchange of knowledge. As teacher he says "I love the process of discovery and the excitement of sharing." He feels teaching and sharing are at the heart of who he is. It would not matter to him if he was teaching photography, computers or other activities in which he is involved such as woodworking, bonsai trees, golfing, fishing and collecting Indian pottery.
He enjoys a good discussion on just about any topic and especially enjoys discussing art. Give him a call or drop an email. He will likely invite you to sit in on a class, critique or to join him for a discussion over lunch.
