- 44 year-old Al Oerter showed that he was a threat to qualify for his fifth Olympic team by winning the discus (214-3) over Mac Wilkins (2nd, 213-4) and John Powell (4th, 211-8)
- Larry Myricks won the first of six long jump titles at Mt. SAC, leaping 26-10 1/4
- Meg Ritchie won the discus with a throw of 201-4
- Jan Merrill won an unusual same-day 10,000m (35:02.7) & 1500m (4:13.54) double
- Jane Frederick broke the American Record, and became the first U.S. woman to top 6000 points in the heptathlon, scoring 6166 (6104 when adjusted to 1985 tables)
