April 28-30, 1972
  • Kjell Isaksson and Bob Seagren both vaulted 17' 7-1/2 for a new stadium record, with Isaksson winning on misses
  • Lee Evans took his third consecutive 440y/400m crown, running 46.0 for 400m to edge Wayne Collett (46.0)
  • Madagascar's Jean-Louis Ravelomanantsoa edged Eddie Hart over 100m, both clocking 10.1
  • George Young moved up from the steeplechase and captured his final Mt. SAC title, winning the 5000m in 13:53.4 over Gerry Lindgren (13:56.4)
  • USC's 400m relay team smoked a 39.5, while UCLA's mile relay team won easily with a 3:04.8 clocking
  • Reynaldo Brown upped his meet record in the high jump, scaling 7' 2"
  • Bill Schmidt, who later in the year would win a bronze medal at the Munich Olympics, took the javelin title with a throw of 265' 3"
  • Lahcen Akka Samsam of Morocco tied the African record while winning the shot with a toss of 66' 3"
  • Mable Fergerson was a double winner in the 100m (11.5) and 200m (23.3)
  • Francie Larrieu also was a double winner, claiming titles in the 800m (2:08.2) and 1500m (4:23.7)
  • Pat Johnson took her second consecutive 100m hurdle title in 13.5w
  • Martha Watson set a meet record in the long jump (21' 5-3/4") that would stand for 10 years.
  • Debbie Brill won her third consecutive high jump title with a leap of 5' 6"
  • Future World Record holder Terry Albritton won the high school shot put with a heave of 66' 9-1/4"
