  • Spectacular fields highlighted this edition of the Relays. Invitational event winners went on to capture a total of 9 medals (6 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze) at the Mexico City Olympics
  • The U.S. Army Ft. MacArthur team broke the World Record in the distance medley, running 9:33.4y
  • U.S. Army sprinters also took the 100m (Mel Pinder, 10.3) and 440y (Bob Tobler, 46.8) titles
  • Tommie Smith won his only Mt. SAC individual title, the 220y, in 20.5w
  • Ron Whitney clocked 50.1y, the fastest 440H ever run at Mt. SAC
  • George Young set a new meet record in the steeplechase, running 8:40.0
  • Tim Danielson, who in 1966 became one of only four high school athletes to break 4 minutes in the mile, moved up to 5000m and cruised to a 14:05.0 win
  • Ken Moore won the 10,000m in 29:32.4
  • Willie Davenport took the 120H in 13.8y
  • Santa Clara became the first 440 relay team to dip under 40 seconds at the Relays, clocking 39.9
  • Ed Caruthers upped his own meet record in the high jump, leaping 7' 3/4"
  • Bob Seagren also upped a meet record, this time in the pole vault, clearing 17' 1"
  • Bob Beamon spanned 27' 4"w in the long jump
  • Randy Matson claimed his first shot put title, tossing 69' 10-1/2"
  • Bill Toomey won the decathlon, scoring 7800 points
