1967 Meet Highlights

April 28-29, 1967
  • San Jose State relay teams, featuring the great Tommie Smith and Lee Evans, won both the 880 (1:24.6) and the mile (3:09.0) titles
  • Ron Larrieu lowered his meet record for 10000m, clocking 29:22.4
  • Ron Whitney won the first of three consecutive 440H titles, running 50.7
  • Ed Caruthers upped the meet record in the high jump to 7' 1/4"
  • Bob Beamon won the first of three consecutive long jump titles, leaping 26' 2-3/4"
  • Art Walker recorded his longest winning mark among his four Mt. SAC triple jump titles, bounding 54' 4-1/4"w
  • Ken Patera, later better known as an Olympic powerlifter and pro wrestler, won the shot with a heave of 61' 6-3/4"
  • Barbara Ferrell won the first of three consecutive 100y/100m titles, dashing 10.5y
  • In what became known as the "Greek Tragedy," San Jose State pole vaulter Chris Papanicolaou appeared to become only the seventh man to clear 17 feet. However, an attandant grabbed Papanicolaou's pole as it teetered under the bar, thus nullifying the vault. Ironically, the official who told Chris his jump would not count was Pete Clentzos, who was a former holder of the Greek national record in the 1930s. Chris's 16' 8" clearance was a new Greek Record. And in 1970, Chris became the first vaulter to clear 18 feet.
