- In what became
known as the "Greek Tragedy," San Jose State pole vaulter
Chris Papanicolaou appeared to become only the seventh man to clear
17 feet. However, an attandant grabbed Papanicolaou's pole as it teetered
under the bar, thus nullifying the vault. Ironically, the official who
told Chris his jump would not count was Pete Clentzos, who was a former
holder of the Greek national record in the 1930s. Chris's 16' 8"
clearance was a new Greek Record. And in 1970, Chris became the first
vaulter to clear 18 feet.
