  • Al Oerter set another discus World Record (the fourth, and final, time he would break the WR during his storied career) by adding almost a foot to his previous record, throwing 206' 6". Oerter also surpassed his previous world record with a final round throw of 206' 4"
  • Grambling College equalled the World Record in the 440 relay, blazing to a time of 40.0
  • Frank Covelli tossed the javelin 260' 7"
  • Dallas Long won his 4th -- and final -- Mt. SAC shot title, throwing 63' 10-1/4", his best mark among his four winning throws
  • Ed Burke won the first of five consecutive hammer titles with a 214' 8-1/2" PR throw
  • Jim Grelle (4:01.1) edged Archie San Romani (4:01.2) in the mile
  • Bob Schul covered 5000m in 13:59.4
  • George Young won his first steeplechase title, running 8:47.4
  • Ralph Boston also notched his first title in the long jump, leaping 25' 10-1/4"w
  • Darel Newman dashed 10.1 for 100m
  • C.K. Yang won his 3rd -- and final -- Mt. SAC decathlon title, scoring 8043 points
  • Paul Wilson of Downey High set a national high school pole vault record with a jump of 15-7 1/2. Finishing third, with a jump of 14 feet, was Bob Seagren
