1962 Meet Highlights


April 27-28, 1962
  • Dave Tork raised the World Record -- the first of many to be set at the Relays -- in the pole vault by 1-1/2 inches, clearing 16' 2". Dave needed only four jumps to set the new mark: he cleared both 15' 0" and 15' 7" on his first attempt, then cleared 16' 2" on his second attempt
  • Jim Grelle became Mt. SAC's first sub-4 minute miler -- and only the 4th American to break the 4-minute barrier -- winning in 3:59.9. This mark would remain the meet record until 1995
  • Henry Carr won the 100y in 9.5
  • Ulis Williams of Arizona State won the 440y in 46.0, still the fastest time for this distance in meet history
  • Arizona State's mile relay team set a new Collegiate Record of 3:07.5, breaking the mark of 3:07.6 set by USC in the 1961 edition of the Relays
  • Occidental ran the fastest two mile relay in meet history, clocking 7:24.7
  • Al Oerter won his first Mt. SAC title, throwing the discus 198' 6"
  • Hal Connolly threw the hammer 226' 1/2", his longest winning throw among his five Mt. SAC victories
  • Olga Connolly won the only women's field event, tossing the discus 164' 7-1/2"
