1961 Meet Highlights


April 28-29, 1961
  • Judy Shapiro of UC Riverside won the first women's running event at the Mt. SAC Relays, covering 440y in 1:00.9
  • Bobby Avant became the Relay's first 7 foot jumper, clearing 7-0
  • Jay Silvester recorded history's greatest one day weight double, throwing 192' 5-1/2" for second place in the discus, and 61' 1-3/4" for second place in the shot
  • Jim Beatty lowered the meet record in the mile to 4:04.9, covering the final lap in 57.9
  • Bob Schul won the steeplechase in 9:14.7
  • Dennis Johnson ran a windy 9.2w in the 100y dash
  • USC relay teams won the 880 relay (1:23.6) and established a new Collegiate Record in the mile relay (3:07.6). Rex Cawley ran 20.5 on the third leg of the 880 relay, and 45.4 for the anchor leg of the mile relay team. Cawley also ran 50.6 to win the 400H
