  • C.K. Yang, a UCLA freshman, scored 7892 points in the decathlon
  • Rafer Johnson took the javelin title with a throw of 236' 11-1/2"
  • Rex Cawley, a freshman at USC, won the first of four consecutive 440H/400H titles, running 52.2
  • Bill Dellinger won the inaugural mile championship in 4:07.7, covering the last lap in 56.9
  • Jim Beatty won the 5000m in 14:13.9
  • Lew Stieglitz lowered the American Record in the 10,000m by over 12 seconds, winning in 30:19.2
  • Ron Morris was a repeat winner in the pole vault, clearing 15' 4"
  • Hal Connolly also was repeat champion, tossing the hammer 225' 1/2", just 3-1/2 inches shy of his world record
  • Olga Connolly became the Relays' first women's event champion, winning the discus with a throw of 169' 5-1/2"
  • San Jose State won both the 440 (40.2) and 880 (1:24.0) relays
