Career Highlights

Ria was a top discus thrower in the late '70s and early '80s. As a competitor for Arizona State, she won the women's collegiate national championship in 1979, and finished second in 1980. After winning the Relays' shot put title in 1981, Ria returned the following three years to win discus titles.

In 1984 Ria not only won the Relays title, but also a pre-Olympic competition at Mt. SAC where she set the still standing stadium record of 233-8 (71.22m). This toss continues to rank Ria among the top 20 all-time discus throwers. Ria also swept the U.S. shot and discus titles as a guest competitor.

Competing for her native Netherlands, she capped her year with an Olympic title at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, winning the competition with her final throw.
