Marion Jones produced another incredible series of marks in 1998.
She had the world leading times in the 100 and 200 meters at 10.65 and
21.62 and the world leading long jump as well at 23-11 3/4.
She won an astounding 34 of 35 final competitions in those 3 events
during the year. She will run the 400 meters at Mt. SAC and wants very
much to go under 50 seconds.
Trindad's Ato Boldon has sparked at the
Relays for the last 3 years. His 9.86 for 100 meters in last year's
meet was the fastest in the world for 1998. He will run his speciality
once again at Mt. SAC as well as running on the great HSI relay teams.
Many other great athletes will compete at the 41st edition of the nations
largest meet. Track and Field fans will not want to miss this one!
As has become customary at the Mt. SAC Relays, excellent sprinting once again dominated the 40th edition of this great meet. Trinidad's Ato Boldon won the 100 in 9.86, a time that was ultimately the fastest in the world for 1998. And Maurice Greene won the 200 in 20.03, which turned out to be the fastest US time for 1998. On the women's side, the great Marion Jones captured the 400 meters in a lifetime best 50.36. And the women's 4 x 100 amd 4 x 400 relays were truly spectacular as the teams from Vector Sports set world leading marks in both. The men's 5000 was a terrific race, with 24 of the 26 runners bettering 14 minutes. The greatest ever one day double in the shot put and discuss highlighted the field events as 2 time world champion John Godina, formerly from UCLA, managed 71-5 1/2 and 218-1 respectively. And former Trojan star Balazs Kiss won his 6th title in a row in the hammer by tossing a fine 260-6.
The 41st edition of the largest track & field meet in the nation will once again showcase many of these great athletes. Many 1998 Goodwill Games champions will compete as athletes get ready for the 1999 World Championships in Seville.
Great collegiate teams will also be competing. Local powers UCLA and USC will be joined by the great teams from Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, SMU, and Stanford just to name a few.
